Day 123
Tuesday 23 May 2017
“The numbers looked great because the White House left out something essential: the cost.”
Day 120
Saturday 20 May 2017
“Nearly one year later, Rich's death remains one of America's thousands of unsolved murders — and the focus of endless conspiracy theories, spread this past week by Fox News, alt-right social media, a local D.C. news station and the Russian embassy in Britain. The reemergence of the conspiracy theory this week, which did not lack for real news, revealed plenty about the fake news ecosystem (or to use BuzzFeed's useful phrase, “the upside-down media”) in the Trump era. It also happened to cause untold pain for the Rich family, which has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the so-called private investigator who led this dive back into the fever swamp.”
Day 118
Thursday 18 May 2017
“Let’s be clear about what’s happening here: Right-wing media is creating coherent alternate storylines with different characters and different context — but a narrative that competes with contextual facts that support a more accurate story. Even amid some of the most troubling presidential news in decades, a huge portion of this country is having a very different experience of these events, and repeating it over and over. Our collective memories — and, in turn, our shared culture — are being splintered.”
Day 115
Monday 15 May 2017
“While the information stream to past commanders in chief has been tightly monitored, Trump prefers an open Oval Office with a free flow of ideas and inputs from both official and unofficial channels. And he often does not differentiate between the two. Aides sometimes slip him stories to press their advantage on policy; other times they do so to gain an edge in the seemingly endless Game of Thrones inside the West Wing.”
Day 111
Thursday 11 May 2017
“Asking an Economist writer if he or she has heard the expression “prime the pump” is like asking Sports Illustrated writers if they’ve heard of “RBIs” or asking someone at Playboy if they’re aware that you can have your body surgically enhanced. Of course they have heard the term, because Trump, contrary to what he suggests, didn’t invent the phrase, much less come up with it “a couple of days ago.””
Day 108
Monday 8 May 2017
“The University of Chicago's Booth School of Business regularly polls economists on controversial questions. In a survey the school published last week on Trump's tax plans, only two out of the 37 economists that responded said that the cuts would stimulate the economy enough to cancel out the effect on total tax revenue. Those two economists now both say they made a mistake, and that they misunderstood the question. “I screwed up on that one,” said one of those two economists, Kenneth Judd, when asked about his response to Trump's tax claim. “I meant to say that this is a horrible idea, a bad idea — no chance in hell.””
Day 101
Monday 1 May 2017
““People don’t realize, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why? People don’t ask that question, but why was there a Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?” In fact, of course, many, many people do ask that question. (One might imagine that Trump, as a creature of Twitter, might be aware of the endless debates about the war in that platform.) What’s more, it is a question that has been definitively answered. The Civil War was fought over slavery, and the insistence of Southern states that they be allowed to keep it.”
Day 99
Saturday 29 April 2017
“The Times has logged at least one false or misleading claim per day on 91 of his first 99 days (Saturday is Day 100). On five days, Mr. Trump went golfing, and on two he made limited public statements. Here’s an assessment.”
Day 94
Monday 24 April 2017
“It had 9.2 million people. It's the highest they've ever had. On any, on air, (CBS “Face the Nation” host John) Dickerson had 5.2 million people. It's the highest for “Face the Nation” or as I call it, “Deface the Nation.” It's the highest for “Deface the Nation” since the World Trade Center. Since the World Trade Center came down. It's a tremendous advantage.”
Day 86
Sunday 16 April 2017
“It was like a visit to the land of Alternative Truth Yet to Come. But it also gave me a glimpse into how our new national look is playing in the global information war, where competing narratives are clashing along a sliding scale of fact and fiction.”
Day 75
Wednesday 5 April 2017
“Mr. Trump gave no evidence to support his claim, and current and former intelligence officials from both Republican and Democratic administrations have said they do not believe Ms. Rice’s actions were unusual or unlawful. The president repeatedly rebuffed attempts by two New York Times reporters to learn more about what led him to the conclusion, saying he would talk more about it “at the right time.””
Day 68
Wednesday 29 March 2017
“Sean Spicer angrily dismissed inquiries about the matter Tuesday, declaring that “every single person who's been briefed on this, as I've said ad nauseam from this podium ... have been very clear that there is no connection between the president or the staff here and anyone doing anything with Russia.””
Day 63
Friday 24 March 2017
“We will immediately repeal and replace ObamaCare - and nobody can do that like me. We will save $'s and have much better healthcare!”
Day 61
Wednesday 22 March 2017
“I inherited a mess in the Middle East, and a mess with North Korea, I inherited a mess with jobs, despite the statistics, you know, my statistics are even better, but they are not the real statistics because you have millions of people that can’t get a job, ok. And I inherited a mess on trade. I mean we have many, you can go up and down the ladder. But that’s the story. Hey look, in the mean time, I guess, I can’t be doing so badly, because I’m president, and you’re not. You know. Say hello to everybody OK?”
Day 50
Friday 10 March 2017
“If there was any argument over whether Trump was flip-flopping on the jobs report at the precise moment it reflected positively on him, White House press secretary Sean Spicer laid it to rest Friday afternoon, telling reporters: “I talked to the president prior to this, and he said to quote him very clearly: 'They may have been phony in the past, but it’s very real now.'””
Day 48
Wednesday 8 March 2017
“And I should have seen it all coming. During my weeks on the Trump media diet, I surfed an endless feedback loop circulating between Trump and his preferred media outlets, where speculation leads to justification, ad infinitum. Through this fish-eye, Trump’s wiretapping tweets don’t look surprising at all. They would instead represent the logical conclusion of what happens when the President of the United States seems to believe everything he hears—and when he limits what he hears to what he wants to hear.”
Day 40
Tuesday 28 February 2017
“The cost savings he persists in bragging about were secured in full or large part before he became president.”
“The 2016 National Academy of Sciences report found that the net cost of immigrants varies drastically by region, but that their average cost to the United States economy between 2011 and 2013 was $57.4 billion. However, the same report found that the children of immigrants make up much of that cost, adding a net benefit of $30.5 billion. Third-generation immigrants far exceeded the cost of their grandparents, adding a $223.8 billion benefit.”
Day 36
Friday 24 February 2017
“From an economic perspective, the change makes no sense — it’s the equivalent of Starbucks accounting for the cost of buying coffee but not the revenue from selling it. But politically, it could serve Trump’s purposes by making the deficit (and therefore U.S. trade policy) look worse than it really is. That could make it easier for Trump to push through protectionist trade policies.”
Day 35
Thursday 23 February 2017
“The web page, unveiled Wednesday, includes links to five English-language news stories about Russia, including articles from Bloomberg, NBC, and The New York Times. The site includes screenshots of the articles with a red “FAKE” stamp on each one. A caption under each screenshot simply claims that the article in question “does not correspond to reality,” without providing any further evidence.”
Day 33
Tuesday 21 February 2017
“The famous flag was displayed with 51 stars, instead of 50, when Mr Pence attended a 30-minute news conference with EU leader, Donald Tusk.”
“White House press secretary Sean Spicer seemed to find his groove Tuesday. What's his new secret? When President Trump says something indefensible, just pretend he said something else.”
Day 31
Sunday 19 February 2017
“Mr. Jones, in case you aren’t aware, is the conspiracy-theorizing, flame-throwing nationalistic radio and internet star who’s best known for suggesting that Sept. 11 was an inside job, that the Sandy Hook school shooting was “completely fake” and that the phony Clinton child-sex trafficking scandal known as Pizzagate warranted serious investigation (which one Facebook fan took upon himself to do, armed with an AR-15).”
““My statement as to what's happening in Sweden was in reference to a story that was broadcast on @FoxNews concerning immigrants & Sweden,” Trump said in a tweet on Sunday. Fox News, a U.S. channel that has been cited favorably by Trump, ran a report Friday about alleged migrant-related crime problems in the country. A White House spokeswoman told reporters on Sunday that Trump had been referring generally to rising crime, not a specific incident in the Scandinavian country.”
““You look at what’s happening,” he told his supporters. “We’ve got to keep our country safe. You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this?” Not the Swedes. Nothing particularly nefarious happened in Sweden on Friday — or Saturday, for that matter — and Swedes were left baffled.”
Day 29
Friday 17 February 2017
“While there are often disparities between the White House and independent agencies on growth projections, they are rarely this large”
Day 28
Thursday 16 February 2017
“In the conversation with Mexico, Trump reportedly broached putting U.S. troops in Mexico. In the call with Australia, he reportedly berated the Australian prime minister for an Obama administration agreement to move refugees from Australia to the U.S. Trump casts neither of these as a particularly big deal.”
“It’s clear the survey hasn’t been updated to reflect the current reality.”
““Why should Americans trust you?” Alexander asked. Trump said he had just been given the information, seeming to imply he had been given incorrect information.”
Day 27
Wednesday 15 February 2017
“Kennedy, a leading proponent of the widely debunked theory that vaccines cause autism, said he spoke with Trump for 20 minutes on Jan. 4 and an hour with him at Trump Tower on Jan. 10. He said everyone in the room engaged in that discussion, including Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Vice President Mike Pence.”
“In this era of fake news, such bold claims should not be left unverified. As our investigation shows, both Donald Trump and Linda McMahon, as shown in figures one and four, would not count as a fully executed Stone Cold Stunner. If both were to receive half credit, the figure drops to 38.5 percent. We rate Mr. McQuade’s claim: False.”
Day 25
Monday 13 February 2017
“Miller claimed this, despite a ruling by a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit that “the Government has pointed to no evidence that any alien from any of the countries named in the Order has perpetrated a terrorist attack in the United States.” What is Miller talking about?”
Spoiler: it's false.
“The Republican Party’s official Twitter account posted, then deleted, a tweet honoring Abraham Lincoln’s birthday by mistakenly attributing an inspirational quote to the revered 16th President.”
Day 22
Friday 10 February 2017
“Indifference about the distinction between truth and lies is the precondition of fascism. When truth perishes so does freedom.”
Day 21
Thursday 9 February 2017
““If the ban were announced with a one week notice, the 'bad' would rush into our country during that week. A lot of bad 'dudes' out there!” Trump tweeted on January 30, without noting he'd expressed his own thoughts on delaying the ban before the order was signed.””
Day 19
Tuesday 7 February 2017
““Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, said Monday that the administration will continue using the term "fake news" until the media understands that their "monumental desire" to attack the President is wrong.””
Day 17
Sunday 5 February 2017
““Absent too is the 2016 bombing of a shopping centre in Baghdad that killed some 300 people, and last week's deadly assault on a mosque in Quebec City.””
Day 14
Thursday 2 February 2017
““The media didn’t cover the Bowling Green Massacre because no such event ever happened.””
Day 11
Monday 30 January 2017
“Their new course title? “Calling Bullshit in the Age of Big Data.””
“""Only 109 people out of 325,000 were detained and held for questioning. Big problems at airports were caused by Delta computer outage, protesters and the tears of Senator Schumer. Secretary Kelly said that all is going well with very few problems. MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!”
Day 7
Thursday 26 January 2017
“But several studies, over many years, have concluded that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United States. And experts say the available evidence does not support the idea that undocumented immigrants commit a disproportionate share of crime.”
“Much of what it presents is misinformation wrapped in right-wing opinion.”
“voters who did not look as if they should be allowed to vote”
Day 5
Tuesday 24 January 2017
“Spicer did not provide hard data to back up the claim”
Day 4
Monday 23 January 2017
“One of the most striking features of the early Trump administration has been its political uses of lying.”
“...falsely claim that millions of unauthorized immigrants had robbed him of a popular vote majority...”
Day 3
Sunday 22 January 2017
“"Alternative facts? Four of the five facts he uttered were just not true. Look, alternative facts are not facts; they’re falsehoods.””
“Trump’s press secretary, Sean Spicer, used his first White House briefing to shout at journalists”
Day 2
Saturday 21 January 2017
“He also called journalists “among the most dishonest human beings on earth,” and he said that up to 1.5 million people had attended his inauguration, a claim that photographs disproved.”
